Info Bombing

Social Measures - Info Bombing

I chose Adam Burtle as my artist of interest. With strong ties to moral justice and activism Burtle created Info Bombing with the hope that it would cause people to stop and have further thought about the subject matter and to (hopefully) further engage themselves by looking up the information displayed on his info posts. He spray paints sidewalks and puts stickers on light poles, medians, dumpsters, benches, etc., in and around Seattle, stating statistical facts about race, poverty, paid maternity leave, and many other global health and social justice issues. I’ve found Burtle’s work to be interesting because it is an inspiring way to get people engaged, to pull us out of our media cocoons. While Burtle’s work is not truly “art” in the sense of a painting or performance, I think the ideas and motives behind it are art. It is a way to have people stop and have further thought about what the statistics actual mean and question their validity. it starts conversation!
The three links below are from Burtle’s Info Social Measures website. Some of the photos on the website, if you click on them, have further information about the statistic: where they come from, and why they are important.

(1)
The first link is a statistic regarding paid parent leave: “Only 11% of American workers are covered by a paid family leave policy for the birth of a child.” Burtle emphasizes that the many reason why this statistic maters is because, “the health benefits of paid leave are only accruing to the children of the most advantaged employees.”

(2)
The second link is a statistic that was published in the American Journal of Public Health in 2011. It draws light upon an economic issue – income inequality – that has been a grow concern in many countries, especially the U.S.

(3)
The last statistic states, “American babies are twice as likely as babies in Estonia to be born at a low birth-weight.” I found this statement to be interesting when considering the economic differences between the two countries. It seems strange that babies born in the U.S. can still suffer from a pure problem like malnutrition when considering our advancements in technology and overall economic wealth.

Henri Matisse

Henri Mattise

Description: Has brief biography of Matisse. Contains vast catalog of his work, over 300 entries.

Description: Website dedicated to Henri Matisse. Has lengthy biography, many of his works are featured, and compares Matisse to other artists like Claude Monet and Paul Cezanne.

Henri Matisse was a painter, sculptor and printmaker. Born in northern France in the late 19th century, he was exposed at a young age to luxury textiles which deeply influenced his sense of visual patterns and color. After studying law in Paris, he began painting which he studied with Gustave Moreau. After 1905, Fauvism had taken over southern France and Matisse began using its clashing colors and bright dynamic style in his own works.

Matisse's art is both abstract and somehow clear. His sketches, mostly found in the MoMA gallery,  contain a story, yet are simple and elegant. They don't overwhelm the viewer. In contrast, his paintings typically contain bright colors that appear against each other. While all are incredibly visually stimulating, they don't all contain as much literal meaning, some are just collections of shapes that look pleasing to the eye.  His work is very flowing, it doesn't seem to be created in painstaking detail. But rather transitioned to the canvas easily and simply.

Miles Johnston

Miles Johnston is a current artist whose art I love to bits. He primarily works in graphite, but has also branched out into digital and even oil paintings. Each of his pieces is just full of textures and details, and he spends many hours working on them to make them perfect. He is currently an instructor at The Swedish Academy of Realist Art, and has previously had his work in various galleries. He has an upcoming exhibition at the Last Rites Gallery starting March 31st. He also made the art for two Magic of the Gathering cards, the Cruel Revival card and the Jhessian Thief card. I love how his pieces are just slightly disturbing, yet reassuring at the same time. It’s as if you can relate emotionally to the pieces, which brings comfort in not being alone in the feeling. I also love how smooth he is able to make everything seem just through different shading. The image above is actually a print I own, and is the first piece of his that I saw and instantly fell in love with. He works hard on his pieces and it shows with how well done they all are.

Miles is currently teaching at The Swedish Academy of Realist Art, and this link is their website with a little more information about him.

I put these two links together because they are essentially the same website. His official website has some additional links to it, but all the posts of his art are straight from his Instagram

Both of these links show a time lapse of Miles drawing his pieces. The first one is a self portrait he did using Procreate, the second one is an older drawing of his using pencil. The second one was also originally created as a tutorial.

Savion Glover

Savion Glover
Famous Tap Dancer, Choreographer, and Actor

Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1973, Savion Glover is thought of as one of the most important tap dancers in the modern dance world and is believed by many to have brought renewed interest back into tap dance. At the age of seven, Savion was introduced to the world of tap dance when his mother signed him up for tap dance classes. Savion eventually fell in love with tap dancing after meeting tap dance legend Gregory Hines, who actually became his mentor. Over the years, Savion has done Broadway, even being nominated for and winning Tony Awards, as well as being featured on a variety of television shows and films. Savion also travels around and teaches tap dance classes and has started his own school for tap. Savion Glover is a living legend in the tap dance community and will forever be remembered for all that he has done for tap dance.

  • This first website describes some of Savion Glover’s background with tap dance, and includes facts about him, such as that he was the youngest person to ever receive a scholarship to the Newark Community School of the Arts and that he developed his own dancing style called “free style hard core.” This website also includes some of the work that Savion Glover has been involved with in television, film, and Broadway. Some of his work includes the Broadway musical The Tap Dance Kid, the major motion picture Jelly’s Last Jam, the children’s television show Sesame Street, as well as the movie Happy Feet.

  • This second website explains more of Savion Glover’s childhood and how he started tap dancing, as well as some of the work that he has done for the tap dancing community. From a young age, Savion Glover portrayed a love for rhythms and at the age of four began taking drum lessons. At the age of seven he began taking rhythm tap dance lessons, which uses different parts of the foot to create sound. In 2009, Savion formed his own school for tap, calling it The HooFeRzCluB School for TaP in his hometown of Newark.

  • This last website portrays Savion Glover’s connection with tap dance legend Gregory Hines, who eventually became Savion’s mentor, as well as how he has been dubbed “the man who saved tap dancing.” This website also lists some of his achievements from films to Broadway musicals and television shows. More recently, Savion performed at the 64th Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, which is hosted in France every year. This festival features creators, pioneers, and trailblazers across many different fields and is popular for its award ceremony, in which they give out their Lion Awards. Included at the end of the article on this website is an interview with Savion Glover.

  • This link is to a YouTube video, in which Savion Glover talks about his background with tap dance and shows some of the performances that he has done over the years.

Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiwei is an artist that I have actually learned about before in an art class.  He is known as being the most famous Chinese artist living today.  He is primarily an advocate for human rights in China.  Free speech is not a law in China, and Ai has paid for things he has said.  Police have beaten him up, bulldozed his brand new studio, and constantly spy on him.  China views him as a threat to their society.  Ai always stands up for the people of China, who get bullied by their government.  He goes above and beyond with his work to support the people, and do what is right, no matter the consequence.  One of his most known pieces is a segment where he would travel to all these different places and capture a photo of himself showing his middle finger towards a place, or person of power.  One reason he was inclined to start this movement was after an earthquake that killed thousands of people, and thousands of children at school.  The children all died, because the government saved money by building a school that was not stable, and far too easily collapsed on the children in the school.  Ai Weiwei wass outraged and started this movement.  Some people are not the biggest fans of Ai Wei Wei, but I personally appreciate the efforts he makes to fight for his people, and to fight for freedom.

This is a piece of Ai Weiwei flipping off the Tiananmen square, which is a place of leadership in China.

In this website, there is a ton of information, and a real summary of what Ai Weiwei has done, and why he does the things he does.  It highlights some of his most important work.  There is also information, of key moments of his life as an artist.

https://www.artsy.net/artist/ai-weiwei

This website shows a lot of Ai Weiwei's exhibition highlights.  There is also a decent sized biography about Ai Weiwei.  There is a ton of his work, with a small description on each piece shown.  Loads of information about him.

https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/ai-weiwei

This last website is really cool because it shows a bunch of different things Ai Weiwei has done as an artist.  It also has a timeline that portrays all of his artwork.  I really liked seeing all of the work done in order, and knowing what came first.

Dinara Kasko

This is Dinara Kasko. She is a pastry chef from Ukraine and creates architectural desserts that look amazing to a seeing eye. I find her relevant because she combined both sweets and art together to create something that's important for her and other people. She is known for her artistic skills through pastry and I love how she inspires other people to be their best.  When she was a kid she was into art and pastry so she combined those two and created a fantastic dessert that was soon all over the internet. There are postings on social media such as Instagram, facebook, and twitter about her and how she makes desserts that are never been seen by many people. When I first saw her video on her desserts it gave me a moment of silence because in all my life I've never seen anything more interesting than seeing desserts being made into art. It made me want to eat her creations and showed it to my family and friends. I wanted to show more of Dinara and blogging about her is the best way. To me sharing information about Dinara is important to me because there are a lot of types of art out there such as painting, drawing, and sculptures. However, there are many people who never saw art in a dessert form in their life. The photos in the blog show some of her creations and why they look amazing.
